Dr. Kate MacKenzie is the instructor of bassoon at Seattle Pacific University. She also regularly performs and tours with ensembles such as The Sound Ensemble, The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, and the Hollywood Concert Orchestra. As an arts advocate, she is active in several governmental organizations and nonprofit boards that that aim to uplift the arts and arts education through Economic Development and supporting the Creative Economy. She sits on the board of the Lake Stevens Arts & Parks Foundation and the Snohomish County Arts Commission. She has been involved with many arts programs and projects in her community, including founding the Lake Stevens Community Concert Band.

Dr. MacKenzie is committed to furthering the inclusion of women on bassoon--recently she gave several lectures and workshops at schools and universities throughout the country on this topic including at the IDRS 2021 Symposium and The Meg Quigley Bassoon Symposium in 2021 and 2023. You can also find Dr. MacKenzie’s extensive research on Performance Anxiety and Gender published in several locations including in the The Double Reed Journal (Understanding Performance Anxiety: An Analysis of Gender and Double Reed Musicians, Vol. 36 No. 2).

She received a Doctorate in Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University, a Master of Music degree from Miami University of Ohio, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of California, Davis. Her primary teachers include Dr. Albie Micklich, Dr. Christin Schillinger, David Granger, and David Seidel.
